Tidal Streams

Extending far into the saltmarsh are tidal streams that allow salt water to surge in at high tide, and out when the tide is low. Soft mud lines the edges of these tidal streams. In the muddy stream banks are many burrows of Red-fingered Marsh Crabs and Semaphore Crabs.

If you look carefully, you can see water in the distance. This is where the tidal water spreads out to form large, very shallow lakes that are surrounded by succulent, salt-tolerant plants of the saltmarsh. Many wader birds roost here.
